The Coverage You Hope to Never Use
Find the Gaps Before the Claim
"I've responded to house fires where the family lost everything, and then learned their coverage hadn't kept up with the home's value. They'd been paying premiums for years, faithfully — and discovered the gap at the worst possible moment, standing in the ashes. The time to read your policy is never after the fire."
"Insurance is one of those things people set up once and never look at again. But your life changes — you renovate, you buy a boat, your net worth grows — and the old policy quietly falls behind. This module is a calm, deliberate look at whether your coverage still matches your life."
This module inventories your property and casualty insurance — home, auto, and umbrella — and hunts for the gaps that turn a survivable loss into a financial disaster.
Read the policy before the fire — never after.
The Coverage to Review
Your Line of Defense
Tap each card.
Does your coverage reflect what it would actually cost to rebuild today (not what you paid years ago)? Are your belongings covered, and for replacement value? Are you protected against the specific risks where you live — flood, wind, earthquake — which are often excluded from standard policies and need separate coverage?
Check your liability limits — the part that protects you if you injure someone or damage property. State minimums are often dangerously low. If you have assets, low liability limits leave them exposed in a serious accident. Also confirm uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage.
An umbrella policy adds a large layer of liability protection on top of your home and auto coverage — often $1 million or more for a modest premium. If a lawsuit or accident exceeds your underlying limits, the umbrella protects your savings and home. For anyone with assets to protect, it's one of the best values in insurance.
Boats, RVs, valuable jewelry or collectibles, a home business, a rental property — these often need their own coverage or a rider, and are commonly under- or un-insured. If you own something valuable or risky, confirm it's actually covered.

The Drill
One coverage call.
You've built up a nice nest egg and own your home. Your auto policy has your state's minimum liability limits because it's cheapest. You don't have an umbrella policy. Where's the risk?

"An umbrella policy is one of the quiet best buys in all of insurance — a million dollars of extra liability protection for a few hundred bucks a year. If you've got assets worth protecting, it belongs on your list. One bad accident or lawsuit is all it takes to wish you had it."
