If the Paycheck Stops
Your Income Is the Engine — and It Can Stall
"As an EMT, I saw how fast a healthy person's life can change. A car accident, a sudden illness, a fall. One day they're working, the next they can't — and the income just stops. The bills don't stop with it. The mortgage doesn't pause out of sympathy."
"Most families insure the house and the cars without thinking twice, then leave the thing that pays for all of it — their income — completely exposed. We assess two scenarios most people never want to picture: what if you couldn't work, and what if you were gone? Uncomfortable questions. But the families who answer them ahead of time are the ones who stay standing."
This module pressure-tests your income protection — your disability coverage and your survivor income — and calculates the gap your family would face if the paycheck disappeared.
You insure the car without blinking. The income pays for the car.
Two Scenarios to Test
The Risks Most People Never Picture
Tap each card.
You're far more likely to become disabled during your working years than to die. Disability insurance replaces a portion of your income if illness or injury stops you from working. Many people have some through work — but it often replaces only part of your pay and may end if you leave the job. The question: if you couldn't earn for a year, or five, what would your family live on?
If you passed away, what income would your household still have? A spouse's earnings, Social Security survivor benefits, pension survivor options, and life insurance proceeds (turned into income). Set that against what your family would actually need to live. The difference is the gap life insurance is meant to fill.
Don't forget what changes: a surviving spouse may need to reduce work to care for children, some benefits are taxed, and Social Security survivor rules are specific. The goal here isn't a precise figure — it's to see whether a gap exists, so you can address it before it's tested.

The Drill
One protection call.
You're the primary earner. You have life insurance, so you figure your family's covered if something happens to you. But you have no disability insurance. Where's the bigger blind spot?

Protection Checklist
Check what you've confirmed. Open boxes are exposures to address.
- Know your disability coverageWhether you have it, and how much it replaces
- Checked if it's portableWhether work coverage would survive a job change
- Estimated survivor incomeWhat your household would have if you were gone
- Identified the gapThe shortfall between income that continues and what's needed
- Considered Social Security survivor benefitsWhat your family would qualify for
- Have a plan to close the gapCoverage, savings, or an advisor conversation
"Disability coverage is the one almost everyone overlooks, and it protects your single biggest asset — the ability to earn. You'll insure a $30,000 truck without a thought, then leave a career worth a million dollars or more completely uninsured. Worth an honest look."
